OUR HISTORY
In 1963, Justino Milanes, then just 17 years old, legally immigrated to the United States from Cuba with his mother and two brothers, seeking a future free from the communist regime of Fidel Castro. The family settled in south Louisiana, where Justino worked to build a new life and earned a BS in Mathematics from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette.

Justino went on to earn his teaching certificate and master's degree, and spent his career passing on a love of mathematics to a generation of Louisiana students as a high school math teacher. That passion for precision and problem-solving did not stop at the classroom door.

Justino's eldest son, Andrew Milanes, grew up watching his father turn numbers into answers. Inspired by that example, Andrew pursued civil engineering — and more than 30 years ago, founded ES2 to carry the family's dedication and work ethic into the geospatial world.

Today, ES2 is recognized as a leading geospatial and engineering firm in Louisiana — a company whose Cuban heritage of resilience, commitment, and precision is woven into the work itself.
A 30-YEAR LEGACY IN THE MAKING
1963
The Milanes Family Arrives:
Justino Milanes, 17, immigrated from Cuba to South Louisiana, beginning a new chapter defined by hard work and education.
1970s
Seeds of Education:
Justino earns his BS in Mathematics, teaching certificate, and master's degree, and begins a career shaping future engineers and scientists in Louisiana classrooms.
1990s
ES2 is Founded:
Andrew Milanes, along with the late Shea Penland and Shaw Thompson, establishes ES2 in Louisiana, building on Andrew's civil engineering background and his family's legacy of precision and dedication.
2000s
Spill Response and Environmental Expansions:
Robert Simmons joins ES2, expanding our spill response and environmental services.
2010s
Esri Partnership Established:
ES2 achieves Esri Partner status, cementing its standing as a recognized leader in GIS and geospatial technology.
2020s
SBA 8(a) Certification & Federal Presence Expands:
ES2 earns SBA 8(a) certification. Robert Simmons retires, and Tom Cousté joins. ES2 grows its federal portfolio, providing geospatial and engineering services to USACE, FEMA, NOAA, and Gulf Coast infrastructure clients.
